CTP Recap: Calvin Coolidge High School
We invited our merry band of Citizen Foresters (CF) out for our final Community Tree Planting of the season last Saturday, and it was a resounding success! Our 58 volunteers, 45 of whom are CFs, added 65 trees to the grounds at Calvin Coolidge High School, and then celebrated the season with a barbecue and a graduation ceremony for all of our new Citizen Foresters.
The fruit trees planted included peaches, plums, figs, apples, cherries, apricots, persimmons, pears and serviceberries. We also added sweetgums, swamp white oaks, willow oaks, honeylocusts, white pines, London planetrees, nuttall oaks, shagbark hickories, pin oaks, Shumard oaks, American hornbeams and a red maple to the grounds. Phew! Good thing we had so many qualified hands helping out, including a group of University of Maryland surveyors. Anna Viggh and Gary McNeil served as our Lead CFs, and Steve Saari was our Project Organizer – thanks to all of them for their help. The planting was sponsored by the Nebraska Society, and we’d like to thank them for their support and their extra hands.
Five new Citizen Foresters have joined our ranks, and they were recognized in a ceremony, complete with caps and gowns for at least the presenters, and welcomed by Executive Director Mark Buscaino and Director of Tree Planting Jim Woodworth.
We had a great morning, and we hope everyone who came out did, too. You can find more photos of the event on our Flickr stream.
