CTP Recap: Bruce Monroe and Park at Ledroit

It was rough work at our two Community Tree Plantings in Ward 1 last Saturday, and the pick axes got plenty of use as our teams tore through old school foundations to plant fruit trees at both Ecolocity at Bruce Monroe Community Garden and the community garden at Park at Ledroit.

Nearly 30 volunteers came out for our planting at Bruce Monroe, including George Washington University’s women’s rowing team. The planting crew was grateful for the athletes’  muscles as they pick axed through the tough soil at Bruce Monroe. Pear, fig, pawpaw and persimmon trees, as well as pecan and almond trees, went in to the ground around the community garden — 17 trees in total. Thanks to Steve Seuser, our Project Organizer, and Suzanne Theberge, our Lead Citizen Forester (CF), for all their hard work.

Meanwhile, at Park at Ledroit, 24 volunteers were toiling through equally difficult soil in the community garden there. Our teams planted 15 trees — pear, figs, persimmons — but not before digging up PVC pipe, 2x4s and bricks. A group from Harvey’s Angels joined us at the planting, and our Lead CF Andrea Moreland and Project Organizer Greg Upland deserve major kudos for everything they did to make the planting a success.

We appreciate everyone who came out for our Earth Day weekend plantings! Check out more photos from Bruce Monroe and Park at Ledroit on our Flickr page.
