Behind the Symposium: Opening and Keynote Speakers

As a final post in our “Behind the Symposium” series, we’d like to give you some more information into one of the oft-overlooked aspects of October 18th’s Tree Canopy Symposium - the opening speakers.

The people that are seemingly flying under-the-radar at this year’s Tree Canopy Symposium are the same people you’d least expect – our opening speakers. Aside from the lengthy list of scientists, researchers, and industry practitioners we have speaking and presenting, we’ll be joined by two local government leaders: the Honorable Vincent C. Gray, current mayor, as well as the Honorable Anthony A. Williams, former mayor.

Their commentary on the importance of the tree canopy issue will help us spearhead the day’s events forward, and set the tone for the rest of our speakers’ presentations. Hearing what local leaders have to say about past, present and future efforts to ensure a healthy and robust canopy in the District is a necessary centerpoint to our work – it takes communication and coordination to make sure we not only grow, but maintain our city’s trees.

Following Mayor Gray and former Mayor Williams, Dr. William C. Sullivan (Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) will join us for a discussion of trees and human health. He will try to answer the question “Why are trees so important?” – not just for physical survival, but for social and emotional reasons as well, explaining how trees impact our lives and improve our health.

Remember – it’s not too late to register now and ensure your seat at the Tree Canopy Symposium. Join us October 18th and lend your voice to one of the most important conversations surrounding our city.

Will you be there?
