2012 H Street Festival Recap
This past weekend Casey Trees was at the H Street Festival, camped out right between 9th and 10th Street! We brought out all the fun stuff – new swag, including our t-shirts, water bottles, hip canteens, gym bags, and buttons. (We’d like to thank our Tree Planting department – we couldn’t have put together such a chic and stylish tent without their help, designing and building the shelves, crates, and screens we used to display it all!) But the biggest element of our tent was surely the prize wheel!!
We were so happy to see so many people interested in giving it a spin and hearing about what we do! But our biggest reason for partaking in the festival (besides wanting to join in on all the fun, obviously) was to help people unfamiliar with what we do understand that our mission goes beyond just planting trees – it’s about educating communities on how important trees are, how much help we need in maintaining these trees, and how they can do it themselves. Remember, we’ll never reach the city’s 40% canopy goal by planting young sapling after young sapling, without taking the time and care as a community to ensure those trees reach their full potential!
We fielded lots of questions on Saturday: everything from “Casey Trees.. is that an apartment building?” to “I have a dogwood in my yard, and I was told it was better to wait until the fall or winter to prune some of the dangerous low branches.. how come?” They all held equal weight (though some of them made us laugh more than others) and we were happy to see so much genuine concern for the trees in front of people’s homes and apartments, by their schools, and in their neighborhoods.
We were also happy to be surrounded by the wonderful people from Live Green, Anacostia Watershed Society, DC Sierra Club, Community Forklift, DCSEU, and DC Habitat for Humanity. Thanks for keeping us company!
Our next endeavors will be coming up this Friday and Saturday – PARK(ing) Day and Barracks Row Fall Festival (respectively)! Be sure to join us – stay tuned for our press release on Parking day, as well as updates via social media later in the week about our Barracks Row location.
