Mark Buscaino - Executive Director

Mark Buscaino became Executive Director of Casey Trees in June, 2006. Previously, he served as National Director for the Urban and Community Forestry Program at the USDA Forest Service beginning in November 2002.  From 2001 - 2002, Mark was Chief and State Forester for Washington , DC where he managed the restructuring and expansion of the District’s urban forestry program and worked with Casey Trees on its landmark inventory of street trees. Mark also served as Urban Forester for Fairfax County , VA ; City Forester and Parks Supervisor for Takoma Park , MD ; and as the Deputy Director of the Urban Forest & Education Program for the City Parks Foundation in New York City , NY .

Mark has a Master’s degree in Forest Resources Management from SUNY-Syracuse, a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration from the University of Maine and was a Peace Corps Forestry Program volunteer in Benin , West Africa for three years.


Mike Galvin - Deputy Director

Mike joined Casey Trees as Deputy Director in May of 2008. Previously, he served as Supervisor of Urban & Community Forestry for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. While at MD-DNR he developed programs to provide urban forestry technical and financial assistance to local governments, non-profits and citizens, and pioneered the use of Urban Tree Canopy goal setting for communities in the Chesapeake Bay region. He also administered a number of tree protection laws, including mitigation of forest loss during state facility and highway construction.

Galvin is a Registered Consulting Arborist, a former co-principal investigator for the National Science Foundation’s Baltimore Ecosystem Study, and author of dozens of publications on arboriculture and urban forestry nationwide. In April of 2007 he received the Tree Care Industry Association’s 2007 Advancing Arboriculture Award for his work to professionalize the tree care industry in Maryland.


Amy Thorn - Executive Assistant

Since May of 2002, Amy Thorn has served in a variety of positions at Casey Trees, including student and volunteer coordinator and program assistant. As Executive Assistant, she now provides day-to-day support to the Executive Director and the Senior Director of Programs and Research.


Beth Volk - Business Manager

Beth Volk has 20 years of experience in professional office and financial management. Prior to joining Casey Trees, she worked for the British American Security Information Council, providing financial management for both the Washington and London offices.


Dan Smith - Senior Director of Communications

Dan joined the staff in July 2004 following a year of consulting. He has over twenty years of environmental communications and policy experience. At American Forests for 11 years he supervised its magazine and website and developed communications strategies for five national urban forest conferences and for the Global ReLeaf 2000 international campaign to plant 20 million trees in environmental restoration projects. The media coverage his team garnered for the 1999 report on tree-canopy loss in the District led to the formation of Casey Trees. As director of communications for Defenders of Wildlife in the 1980s his team received national recognition for an education campaign supporting the restoration of wolves to Yellowstone National Park. He recently completed a documentary film, The American Elm: Majestic, Imperiled, Renewed about the history, decline and return of America’s most popular and loved urban tree for a project funded by the National Urban and Community Forestry Advisory Council. Dan is active in area efforts to restore the Anacostia River. Born in Iowa, he grew up in Montana and is a graduate of Dartmouth College.





Catherine Handren - Communications Associate

Catherine joined Casey Trees in 2007 taking on the Communications Associate position. She holds a B.A. in English literature from the University of Maryland, College Park. Before coming to Casey Trees, Catherine worked as an Editorial Aide for The Washington Post’s Style section, where she was also a Copy Aide. Catherine has written articles on everything from orphans in Honduras to sunscreen. When she is not helping to spread the word about Casey Trees, she enjoys reading, art, music, travel and sharing her incredibly insightful views about the world with others.


Holli Howard - Director of GIS and IT

Holli Howard has been with Casey Trees for over five years currently as the Director of Data Gathering and Analysis. Holli holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of New Hampshire and completed her graduate work in Environmental Science at the University of Tasmania, Australia where her thesis focused on using GIS to research the effects of climate change on the distribution of Tasmanian Alpine Plants. She is an ISA Certified Arborist and Master Gardener.



Mike Alonzo - GIS Specialist

Mike joined Casey Trees in 2007 in the role of GIS Specialist. He holds a B.A. in Geography from Middlebury College and an M.A. also in Geography from the University of Denver. He certainly enjoys Geography. Prior to arriving at Casey Trees, Mike worked as a GIS consultant for a community in suburban Denver and as a health care IT consultant in Madison, Wisconsin. Mike is glad to be back working in an environmental field and looks forward to getting muddy and making maps.



Sue ErhardtDirector of Education and Training

Sue Erhardt became Education Director of Casey Trees in September, 2007. Previously, she served as Education Director and Governmental Liaison for The Greening of Detroit for nine years. In Detroit, she created an environmental education program that was instituted throughout the Detroit Public Schools. The goal of the program is to increase environmental science skills among children through outdoor exploration, creating the next generation of environmental stewards. Sue has a Master’s degree in Environmental Studies from The University of Michigan-Dearborn and a Bachelors of Science in Resource Development from Michigan State University.




Carol Herwig - Volunteer Coordinator

Carol Herwig comes to Casey Trees as Volunteer Coordinator after more than 30 years in newspapers, including 25 with USA TODAY. She has been a community volunteer and activist in the Petworth area of Washington and with Casey Trees, becoming a Citizen Forester and guiding several planting projects. She has a BA from University of Maryland University College.


Christina Escobar - Education Assistant

Christina joined Casey Trees in May of 2008 as our Education Assistant. She graduated with an MSW from the University of Maryland at Baltimore, School of Social Work in 2007. During her studies, she was an intern at the Reservoir Hill Improvement Council where her work was focused on community organization. Christina is excited to be assissting the Citizen Forester Program.

 

Heather Whitlow -Director of Green Infrastructure Planning & Design

Since 2005, Heather has worked closely with City and federal agencies, consultant teams, and developers to promote policies, designs, and construction techniques that preserve and increase the District’s tree canopy and green infrastructure. Prior to joining Casey Trees, Heather spent several years as a transportation planner and GIS specialist in local and regional governments. Over the last ten years, she has also worked and volunteered in hands-on and environmental education programs, both locally and in locations as far away as Mexico and Chile. Heather holds B.S. degrees in Environmental Engineering and Chemistry from Michigan Technological University, and a Masters of Community Planning from the University of Maryland. She is thrilled to use her engineering background, education skills, and planning experience to promote trees and green infrastructure in urban environments.




Meredith Upchurch - Green Infrastructure Designer

Meredith joined Casey Trees in Green Infrastructure Design in February 2006. She was detailed to the D.C. Office of Planning and Department of Transportation for six months to analyze the regulatory & permit process to encourage better public landscapes and to advance vegetated stormwater systems in the city. She is currently developing recommendations for advanced tree space design methods and providing design input for Casey Trees projects, partnerships, and DC development initiatives. Her previous experience includes eleven years in system analysis and engineering management for Lockheed Martin on large-scale space based systems. Meredith has a Masters in Landscape Architecture from Virginia Tech, Certificates in Woody and Herbaceous Plants from George Washington University, and a Bachelor in Engineering from Duke University. She also volunteers as a Master Gardener promoting environmentally responsible gardening practices. Meredith believes that landscape should be used to help mitigate the urban environmental problems with water quality, air quality, and energy use and is excited to be working to make that happen.




Bess Wellborn - Planning & Design Fellow

Bess joined Casey Trees in January 2008 as a Planning & Design Fellow. She began working with trees in the late 90s -- first on the grounds and in the botanic library of the Arnold Arboretum in Boston, MA and then at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. After receiving her Masters of Landscape Architecture from University of Virginia in 2004, she served as a community planner and designer with E² Inc., a Charlottesville, VA-based environmental consulting firm. Bess has also worked with The Bioengineering Group in Salem, MA as an ecological designer. She received her B.A. in Geology from Wellesley College.



Jim Woodworth - Director of Community Outreach and Technical Assistance

Jim Woodworth (aka "Woody") joined Casey Trees in July of 2003 with eight years of experience in urban ecology, community forestry, and watershed management.
He spent the previous two years with the Natural Resources Defense Council in Washington, DC. His work was focused primarily on restoring the Anacostia River through projects involving environmental advocacy, watershed management, low impact development, and storm water management.
Jim holds a Master's degree in Environmental Management from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies.
Between his duties at Casey Trees which include coordinating community tree plantings and serving as field supervisor for the summer intern program, Jim enjoys biking, playing Frisbee, kayaking and shoveling truckloads of mulch.



R. Milan Davis - Manager, Field Operations

Following work as a summer Team Leader and fall Tree-Planting Associate, Milan joined Casey Trees as Manager of Field Operations in January 2005. Milan holds a degree in Landscape Architecture from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University. While there, he spent a semester at the Washington Alexandria Center of Design where he participated in the Memorial Groves of DC design competition. Milan was also an intern for the American Horticulture Society, where he worked with the curator of the gardens. While there he helped with the installation of a native meadow on George Washington’s River Farm, where over 35,000 plugs where planted. Milan has also worked for the Marine State Park Division, Department of Natural Resources and on hiking trails located around Prince William Sound. He became an ISA Certified Arborist in 2005, is a certified Red Card Wildland Firefighter and also attended the Municipal Forester Institute in Lake Arrowhead, CA.




Matthew Fried - Tree Planting Program Coordinator

Matthew joined Casey Trees in the Fall of 2007. He holds a B.S. in Natural Resource Sciences from the University of Maryland. After college Matthew worked in the communications department for a national public health watchdog and as foreman for a restoration ecologist. This past summer he led a crew of D.C. high school students on trail maintenance projects in Fort Washington Park for the Student Conservation Association. When not planting trees, Matthew enjoys cycling, vegetable gardening and cooking.


Chris Holmes - Urban Forestry Apprentice

Since July of 2005, Chris Holmes has been employed at Casey Trees for a number of different positions, including Summer Intern and Team Leader. Chris joined Casey Trees fulltime in August 2007. He is very excited to be here and hopes he can make a difference.
